Thank you for your interest in Kalendars. Our goals are to design and develop an on-line interactive database of Latvian names which provides for a creative and unique index to compilations and networked resources for and about the Latvian language, culture and heritage.
To date, our Latvian names databank houses over 1100 names and associated namedays. In this compilation, we strive to present information in a clear, concise, and easily understandable format.
To assist our readers in finding a name or nameday, we have
| 1. designed our database to be accessible by name or month |
| 2. modified our search engines to give users the ability to type diacritic letters using standard keyboards & common fonts |
| 3. included a "Latvian Letter Image Catalog " to accompany our search results to resolve discrepancies in letter appearance caused by Internet browser font dependency. |
Feedback from our readers indicate that they would also like to know more about the meanings & history of names. To accommodate these questions, we are looking to apply interactive database tools (MySQL, php3, perl, html, and cgi) in the development and compilation of a virtual reference guide whose primary function is to relate our names databank to resources in Latvian genealogy, literature, history, geography, and culture. This virtual guide will serve to:
| 1. coordinate data and information which is currently available, but often difficult to find |
| 2. facilitate the collection & dissemination of informational resources in an organized manner and |
| 3. provide guidance for the compilation of new resources |
| This virtual guide can & will have the ability to share with the Internet community an increased awareness, respect, and understanding, for the diversity of our lands and our peoples. |
We believe these goals are within our grasp. The Internet can, and does, provide a global community with International resources. Through the use of "cyberspace" a virtual wealth of information is available at our fingertips. It is to our advantage, as a whole, to share what is known towards establishment of common reference bases.
We have taken the initiative to design and manage a basic reference for Latvian first names. This work is shared with a global community at http://www.daily-tangents.com/Kalendars.
We strongly believe these efforts are worthwhile and we are confident that we have the ability to provide our readers with quality resources. At this time, we are looking for sponsors and funding opportunities which would help us defray recurring operation and maintenance costs associated with the names database. We are also in need of supportive funding which allows us to continue the acquisition, compilation, and coordination of new activities associated with the management, design, and development of a "Virtual Guide to the Latvian Names DataBank".
