GRID-Adrendal
Baltic Sea Drainage Basin
Example Maps & Summary

A summary guide to maps and data sets of the Baltic Sea Region GIS, Maps and Statistical Database - United Nations Environment Programme GRID-Arendal.   Maps, data, and statistical tables provided by GRID are part of the Baltic Drainage Baisin Project and are free for distribution. No permissions are required to download and copy them.   Maps are available in "gif", "tif", and "eps" graphical formats. Mapping data are available as ArcInfo, Idrisi, or MapInfo GIS format files. Statistics are available in "txt", "xls" and "csv" formats.

Maps provided by GRID describe administrative units, arable & pasture lands, coastlines, land cover, population density, national boundaries, capitals, hydrology, and other related features of the Baltic Sea Drainage Basin (BSDB).

These preview images are designed to offer readers the opportunity to quickly and easily assess informational content of GRID source maps and data. Each preview image is accompanied by a description detailing countries, watersheds, land use, or other features noted on the GRID source map. Common descriptors include:

Map ID unique identifier provided on the GRID source image.
GRID Image direct link to the full sized image at GRID. Image dimensions in pixels and file size in Kb are noted.
PageView direct link to a "landscape print page" image view. Image dimensions in pixels and file size in Kb are noted.
Map Notes components of the source map; "*bottom right" indicates that that particular reference note is located on the bottom right hand side of the source map image.
Comments Additional information related to the map or data set.
Email Note This link directs your notes and comments about a particular image/descriptor pair to our categorized email boxes by subject. Subject lines can be modified as needed to reflect message content and scope.

More About Image Sizes

This image index provides the reader with a series of image sizes for a variety of needs. Preview images are smaller, faster loading, and generally show much less detail. GRID Source images are larger, take longer to download, and show the most detail. PageView rescales were created as a compromise between the two. We have found that a map width of 845 pixels and map height of 620 pixels will comfortably print GRID maps onto "letter-size" paper in landscape mode [set print page margins to 0.2"]. Images which are significantly larger than these dimensions will require more than one page to print. The PageView rescales of the GRID source images are designed to accomondate the "printed page". They contain more details than the preview image maps while constraining source image map extents to a single page.

More About PageView Rescales

PageView rescales allow the reader to print an otherwise large image onto a standard letter size print page. The GRID PageViews referenced in this catalog were created by redefining the "width" and "height" tags of the original source image. Although images appear smaller and can be printed on a single page, they still maintain the original file size and dimension characteristics previously noted for GRID Source. Downloading an image from PageView is the same as downloading an image from GRID.

Example

The GRID Image for Arable Lands has a width of 946 pixels and height of 694 pixels.

To fit this image comfortably on a printed page in landscape mode, the width of the image should not be significantly greater than
845 pixels.

To create PageView rescale images without image processing, we calculate the ratio by which this image must be reduced in width:
          (
845 ) / ( 946 ) = 0.8932

Use this ratio to calculate a new dimension for image height :
          ( 0.8932 ) * ( 694 ) ~= 619.9 ~=
620

We substitute the resized dimensions into a new HTML <img> tag ...

<img src="http://www.grida.no/prog/norbal/baltic/gifs/arable.gif" width="
845" height="620" alt="PageView for GRID Source Map : Baltic Sea Drainage Baisin : Arable Lands" >

.... resulting in an image suitable for printing.
