Battle of The Books Resource Guide

Tangential Clues to Finding Answers
Substituting Values

GIVEN:
Roman Letter Numerals
I  =  (+1) or (-1)
V  =  (+5)
X  =  (+10) or (-10)
L  =  (+50)
C  =  (+100)
Determining the value of "I" or "X".

In a given sequence, if the absolute value for the Roman Letter Numeral "I" or "X" is less than the absolute value of the Roman Letter Numeral to the right of "I" or "X" then the value of "I" or "X" is negative (-). Otherwise, the value of "I" or "X" is positive (+).

ROMAN LETTER NUMERALs: EXAMPLEs for "I", "V", "X", "L" and "C"

XII  =  (+10) + (+1) + (+1)  =  12
XIV  =  (+10) + (-1) + (+5)  =  14   NOTE: the absolute value of "I" (1) is less than the absolute value of "V" (5), therefore the value of "I" is negative (-1).   IV=4
LXXIX  =  (+50) + (+10) + (+10) + (-1) + (+10)  =  79   NOTE: the absolute value of "I" (1) is less than the absolute value of "X" (10), therefore the value of "I" is negative (-1).   IX=9
XCIX  =  (-10) + (+100) + (-1) + (+10)  =  99   NOTE: the absolute value of "X" (10) is less than the absolute value of "C" (100), therefore the value of "X" is negative (-10).   XC=90
CXLVI  =  (+100) + (-10) + (+50) + (+5) + (+1)  =  146   NOTE: the absolute value of "X" (10) is less than the absolute value of "L" (50), therefore the value of "X" is negative (-10).   XL=40
