The Latvian Alphabet

The Latvian alphabet set referenced and indexed for the Virtual Latvian Nameday Calendar, consists of 35 letter pairs. Each letter pair is composed of upper and lower case characters.

Latvian and English[=Roman] alphabet letter pairs

22 Roman letter pairs are common to English and Latvian

Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pp Rr Ss Tt Uu Vv Zz

13 Latvian letter pairs have a diacritical mark

\A\a   \C\c   \E\e   \G\g   \I\i   \K\k   \L\l
\N\n   \O\o   \R\r   \S\s   \U\u   \Z\z

We represent the "diacritical letter"
by preceding that letter with a "\".

Of the 35 Latvian letter pairs, 22 letter pairs are common with the english language alphabet set. The remaining 13 Latvian letter pairs are a subset of the original 22 Latvian letter pairs with the addition of a "diacritic mark".

Diacritical marks on letters
indicate a change in pronunciation

By substituting a "backward slash" ("\") for the "diacritic mark" in the diacritical letter, it is possible to search for names within a databank and remain sensitive to diacritical nuances.

To visualize the latvian alphabet, individual graphical images were created to represent one of each of the letter pairs, for a total of 70 images. All images are 10-18 pixels wide and 23 pixels high. Individual image sizes range from 100-120 bytes.

The resultant latvian alphabet image catalog and related encoding is shown below.
